Aerodynamics
Rear wing
Facts:
- a wing shaped aerodynamic device attached to the body of a car
- like an airplane wing it creates a lift force by lowering the pressure of the air flowing along the longer side of the wing therefore creating a suction effect
- unlike the airplane wing the longer side of the car wing is the bottom one
- therefore the lift force aims downward
- it compensates for the lift force created by the same effect thanks to the natural shape of a car (the top has longer surface than the bottom) and increases traction
- it works at higher speeds only
Rear spoiler
Facts:
- a small aerodynamic device attached close to the body of the car
- helps to lead the air off the rear of the car
- reduces the low-pressure zone behind the car lowering drag and instability
- does not increase traction by downward force
- makes the car look better (sometimes)
