I have discovered an interesting cleaning agent for that annoying baked in black dust from brake pads - an oven cleaning foam. Just spray it on, leave it for few hours, then wipe the dirt off and rinse. Just be careful and test it first as your rims might not like it. But it did work on mine very well.
